Private lessons

Students will receive 2 lessons of 50 minutes each from the 4 faculties.

Quartet Lessons

There are viola quartet lessons for groups of four students. Each group will take 3 lessons by the Faculty in charge.
The quartet members will be decided by the Faculty. The TSIVC executive office will inform students of the composition to be learned by each quartet and will distribute the sheet music to them.

Alexander Technique Lessons

During the Master Class period, each student may take up to two 30-minute lessons of the Alexander Technique per day on a reservation basis.

Master class concert I - The Final Concert

Students will perform one 10-minute piece from the course and the piece of the viola quartet at the Master Class Concert I - the Final Concert on Friday, September 20th.

・Recording and Distribution of Lessons and Concerts

The lessons during the opening of the Tamba Sasayama International Viola Master Class 2024, which will be open to the public, will be recorded. Some of the recorded lessons will be carefully selected and distributed for a fee after the Master Class. The Final Concert will be fully recorded and available on YouTube after the event.

The Tamba Sasayama International Viola Master Class Executive Committee has unrestricted rights to broadcast, televise, publicly perform, present, record, video-record, publish, and portray any part of the students’ work in the TSIVMC2024. This includes, but is not limited to, rehearsals and performances during the concert as well as ceremonies, lessons, and related events.

今井 信子[Viola]

Profile

With her exceptional talent, musical integrity, and charisma, Nobuko Imai is considered to be one of the most outstanding violist of our time.
Formerly a meber of the esteemed Vermeer and Michelangelo Quartet, she combines a distinguished international career as a soloist, chamber musician, and educator. She has appeared with many of the wolrd’s prestigious orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw, the London and Boston Symphony among many others.

Ms. Imai has dedicated a large part of her artistic activities to explore the diverse potential of the viola, such as annual “Viola Space” project, Hindemith Festivals (1995/1996), and The Tokyo International Viola Competition, the first international competition in Asia exclusively for viola. She has made more than 40 recordings for BIS, Chandos, Philips, Sony among others.
Currently she is teaching at Amsterdam Conservatory, Kronberg Academy, and Queen Sofia College of Music in Madrid.

Greeting

In addition to myself, The Imai Viola Quartet consists of Veit Hertenstein, Wenting Kang, and Nian Liu. They are musicians I highly respect and who have much to offer the student body as instructors.
A new master class is poised to begin with myself and this team of experts in Tamba Sasayama, located in Hyogo Prefecture in 2021.
Drawing on my experience with a viola master class held in Otaru, Hokkaido Prefecture for 15 years, we have launched this new program as an opportunity for people of all ages and nationalities, from students to professionals, to learn more in Tamba Sasayama.

Students of the viola face various challenges, as do professional violists. Even after becoming a professional player, the challenges ahead are many.

The Tamba Sasayama Master Class allows those facing a variety of challenges on the route to mastery of the instrument to further their studies with us.

Tamba Sasayama is a historic castle town. It is a wonderful location rich in natural scenery that allows you to experience Japanese culture up close. We look forward to meeting you all soon in Tamba Sasayama.

ファイト・ヘルテンシュタイン[Viola]

Profile

German violist Veit Hertenstein plays with “brigthly ringing, luminous and finly finessed sound (The Stard Magazine 2022).

Mr. Hertenstein studied at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva, where he worked with Nobuko Imai. He also has been artistically influenced by György Kurtag, Krzysztof Penderecki, Gabor Takács-Nagy and Kim Kashkashian.

He has been invited to Marlboro Music Festival, Viola Space, Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Verbier Festival and La Folle Journée. As a chamber Musician he collaborated with Trio Wanderer, Modigliani and Ysaye Quartets, Brigitte Engerer, and Midori. Mr. Hertenstein has won several prestigious competitions such as the New Talent Competition of the European Broadcasting Union and the first Tokyo International Viola Competition 2009.

As the winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions 2011, he performed in several cities in the United States, such like New York and Washington D.C.. Former
principal violist in the Basel Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Hertenstein is currently Professor at the Musikhochschule Detmold, Germany and joined the Schumann String Quartet in 2022. He plays on a viola made by Pietro Giovanni Mantegazza, Milano 1767.

ウェンティン・カン[Viola]

Profile

Chinese violist Wenting Kang appeared as an “excellent violist” who “possesses a dark glowing sound” in the New York Times after her performance at Carnegie Hall. Her debut CD recording with pianist Sergei Kvitko “Mosaic” was released received many positive reviews, among which Gramophone Magazine noted “Part of the allure is her golden and glowing tone but the subtlety of her shading is just as transfixing.”

Kang appeared as soloist collaborating with major orchestras such as Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra, Nagoya Philhamonic Orchestra working with conductors including Ivor Bolton, Michiyoshi Inoue, and José María Moreno.

Kang studied at Central Conservatory in Beijing, the New England Conservatory, and the Kronberg Academy, under the guidance of renowned teachers such as Nobuko Imai, Kim Kashkashian, Garth Knox, Donald Weilerstein, Miriam Fried, and Changhai Wang.

In the academic year of 2024-25, Kang is joining the viola faculty at the New England in Boston. From 2016 to 2024, she has been active as assistant professor for the international viola class of Nobuko Imai at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid. In recent years, Kang has taught masterclasses for viola and chamber music in prestigious institutions such as Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Franz Liszt Academy of Music. She was invited to give masterclasses in various festivals throughout Europe and Asia.

Its roles range from solo work, or leading voice, to the inner voice, and more. In our viola masterclass, we focus on various repertoires in detail. We always try to discover and expand the possibilities, both in instruments and musically.

We truly look forward to working with very talented young violists, as well as drawing inspiration from the great works and insights of wonderful colleagues in the beautiful Tamba Sasayama.

ニアン・リウ[Viola]

Profile

Viola professor of Shanghai Conservatory of Music, doctoral supervisor, excels in solo performance and chamber music, contemporary music, etc. He takes an active part in all kinds of music festivals and academic activities.

During his teaching and playing, he has won many fund awards and achieved numerous honors, play with world known artists in famous concert halls, and what’s more, he also made his students accomplished and winners of a lot of contests in China and abroad. He was awarded by the Austrian government for 08-09 Austria’s best classical music, “CARINTHICUM Award” in July, 2009.

Mr. Liu studied under Pro. JIANG Sumin, Pro. SHEN Xidi, and Mr. Donald McInnes at the affiliated high school of Central University for Nationalities, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and USC Thorton School of Music, during which he gained his own laurels in countless contests and competitions all over the world, and absolutely made his mark in the music world. The collaborations with innumerable renowned orchestras, musicians, and composers have refined and diversified his music.

Mr. Liu also premiered and recorded China first Viola Concerto, and many unaccompanied music. After 2010, he joins “Han” quartet, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s first resident string quartet. The quartet appears at the international festivals in Europe and the United States, and made the adaptation and recording of the Bach’s two and three parts inventions for strings.

  • 大島亮[Assistant/Viola]

    Profile

    Ryo Oshima graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music and its graduate school. He won first place in the 11th Concours de Maronie for Strings(in Japan) and the 7th Tokyo Music Competition for Strings, and received a diploma at the 42nd International Instrumental Competition in Markneukirchen.

    As a soloist, he has performed with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, and the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. Since his debut recital at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in 2012, he has regularly held recitals to much acclaim. He has also appeared at events such as Viola Space, the Tokyo Spring Music Festival, the Ravenna Festival, the Miyazaki International Music Festival, the Kiso Music Festival, with the Mito Chamber Orchestra, and the Saito Kinen Orchestra, as well as on NHK-FM’s “Recital Nova.”

    In chamber music, he is actively performing with artists such as Sadao Harada, Myung-Wha Chung, Yuzuko Horigome, and Ikuyo Nakamichi.

    Oshima also dedicates himself to teaching, serving as an assistant to Nobuko Imai at the Yuragi-no-Sato Viola Masterclass and teaching at various seminars across Japan.

    He studied under Nobuo Okada and received guidance from Mstislav Rostropovich and Robert Mann. Currently, he is the principal violist of the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra.

  • 草 冬香[Piano]

    Profile

    Holds a Master’s degree from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Graduated from the day program and soloist program at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Germany with highest marks, obtaining certification as a national performer.
    Has studied with Yasuko Sugimoto, Yuko Watanabe, Hitoshi Kobayashi, Kei Ito, and Gilead Mishory.

    Took first place at the 4th Rosenstock International Piano Competition, first place at the 2nd Arthur Leptien International Piano Competition, and numerous other accolades.

    Performed at the Budapest Spring Festival, Mozart Music Festival, and, in Japan, at the Karuizawa Arts Festival, La Folle Journée au Japon, the Ishikawa Music Academy, ViolaSpace, and more. Has also appeared on Hungarian radio, NHK-BS Classic Club, and NHK-FM Recital Nova, among others. Performs with the Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and others. Recorded performances of work by Bach and Toru Takemitsu with SWR (Southwest German Radio Symphony Orcestra).

    Is also actively involved in chamber music and performs alongside Nobuko Imai and other noted performers.

    Has garnered acclaim for work with viola ensembles, such as at Nobuko Imai’s Yuragi no Sato Viola Master Class, Wolfram Christ’s academy (Germany), all viola classes at The Great Mountain Music Festival (South Korea), and as the official pianist for the 4th Tokyo International Viola Competition.

    Following a position as a part-time lecturer at the Tokyo University of the Arts, now acts a part-time lecturer at the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, training the next generation of musicians.

  • 伊藤 修子[Piano]

    Profile

    Shuko Ito studied piano performance at Ueno Gakuen University Faculty of Music Department of Music Soloist Course, Music Department of Music Postgraduate Diploma Course in Music Instrument Music Studies in Japan. Her principal teachers include Yukio Yokoyama, Rena Miyamoto and Teruko Tanaka. She also studied chamber music under Sadao Harada and Tatsuya Shimono.

    Subsequently, she received two masters degrees in Concert Instrument Option musique de chambre and d’accompagnement from Haute école de musique de Genève in Switzerland, studying with Jean-Jacques Balet and Gui-Michel Caillat.

    After her return to Japan in 2018, Shuko served as accompanist pianist at “The Viola Academy” sponsored by the Ono Culture Foundation and “Tamba Sasayama Viola Master Class 2021”. In Geneva, upon recommendation from faculty, she served as studio pianist for the class of Patrick Genet (violin) and Matthias Buchholz (viola).

    She was invited to perform at the Graduation Concert held at the Imperial Household Agency, and the Annual Concert by “Rookie” Musicians series in both Tokyo and Aichi.

    In 2012, Shuko participated in the Japanisches Sommerseminar in der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, working with Professor Michael Krist. Since 2019, she has participated in “A Seminar on Chamber Music for Pianists” sponsored by the Ono Culture Foundation.

    Currently, to further refine her artistry as a chamber musician, Shuko works closely with Nobuko Imai,Fuyuka Kusa, and Ryo Oshima.

  • 松田 龍[Piano]

    Profile

    Graduate of Toho Gakuen University. Began playing piano at age five under Yukari Hagiwara, then studied under Naoko Shibanuma at age seven. After enrolling in the Toho Gakuen Music High School (Co-ed), studied under Nobutatsu Kawashima.

    Placed third at the seventh and eighth Toho Gakuen Piano Competition. Performed at the Toho Gakuen Music High School Graduation Recital, Toho University Graduation Recital, Japan Piano Technicians Association Newcomer Concert, and more.

    Placed 3rd (highest rank) in the chamber music division at the sixteenth All Japan Art Association Competition. Served as the official accompanist at the 2021 and 2022 Ono Culture Foundation’s Viola Juku.

    Currently active as a performer while serving as a part-time piano teacher at the Toho Gakuen University Children’s Music School.

  • 小野 ひとみ[Alexander Technique]

    Profile

    Upon graduating from the Osaka College of Music (Voice), Hitomi Ono studied Voice, Languages, and the Alexander Technique in Europe and the USA for 11 years. In 1993, she returned to Japan and became the first Japanese teacher to teach the Alexander Technique. For this, she was recognized by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT, England).

    Since then, she has been teaching the Alexander Technique primarily to musicians in Japan and abroad.

    From 1997 to 2014, she taught the Alexander Technique as a lecturer at the Soai University (Music Department) in Osaka.

    From 2009 to 2010, with the recommendation of Nobuko Imai, she conducted lessons and workshops at the Geneva Conservatory of Music and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland.

    In 2012–2017, six teachers were trained through her Alexander Technique Teacher Training Class, which is the first Japanese training class recognized by the STAT.

    Since 1999, as the first Andover Educator, Hitomi Ono has been conducting a course named “What Every Musician Needs to Know About the Body” and teaching “Body Mapping” to Musicians.

    In 2017, she was the Representative Director of Andover Educators Japan, and was in charge of teacher training.
